Probably went too far and need to smooth this back out. Learned a nice lesson on evening out values when glazing to preserve contrast…I went too dark with my shadow glaze and my mid-shadow glaze against the previous highlights took out about 4 layers of blending 😐
I continued highlights from the last update, moving through Ghost White into a Ghost/Pure White for the highest high. Then I started putting in some colored glazes to spice it up.
Glazes (I call them that even though I don’t glaze over the whole area, maybe ‘targeted glazing’ is appropriate?) run Nightshade Purple, Imperial Purple and Violet Red. Then a wee bit of one of the highlight Ghost/Pure White mixes glazed to a few spots where the highlights got lost.
Did some layering on the skin, taking a break so I snapped some pics. Still not gelling where I want it, but it’s fun just layering. Went a bit gradual for a Bones job, this is base + 4 layers working ghost white slowly into the hd concrete grey. Right now it’s mostly trying to smoothly lay on whiter tones, as I’ve struggled with that every time I’ve tried.
When I say 4 layers, I mean 4 color mixes. It’s fairly thin so many passes of the same color on each layer. Not glaze thin, but more or less my usual layering thin.
Not really feeling strongly about painting anything in particular, so I nabbed Goldar at random from the pile and got him base coated.
One cool thing was the axe shaft – my original chestnut was way too high in chroma (I’m learning things!) compared to the really desaturated look of the rest of him. So I tried to add some grey to knock it down, but grey…she’s tricksy! Turned green, so I guess there was some lurking blue in the grey. Feeling playful, I put in some linen white (I had meant to grab leather white woops), which lightened it too much but did push it a bit in the right direction…so then I put in a dollop of the ashen brown I based the browns in and voila, very close to the color I had intended to mix! I was kind of amazed and proud of myself, a moment where vision and theory and practice kind of gelled (it’s a first).
I know the greys look close now, but hopefully after shading and moving them toward a more finished color they’ll separate out enough. But I was a bit concerned about it, so I went back and used brown liner /after/ base coating…a lot more tense then using it before!
Ok, zombronies (whatever) are done! I’d say not quite six hours from start to finish, with a little time fiddling around picking accents. Fast/Faster/Fastest:
Blood I based with Brick Red, then used the new KS blood triad. Unfortunately some of the browns, greys and purples I put onto #1 and a little bit onto #2 don’t really show in the pics.
Flesh brought up the rest of the triad – Moldy and Bloodless.
Practicing painting faster, it’s tough to be so messy and it’s still kinda slow…But I want to have the colors and tabletop practice for Zombicide!
So, with Zombicide just around the corner I figure it’s time to come up with color schemes. Enter the Bones zombies…bonzombies!
Lined with Walnut. Base coats – flesh Ghoul Skin; pants Basic Dirt; hair Aged Bone.
No mini painting, but getting stuff done around the house and playing The Walking Dead, good times, weather has been perfect for a couple weeks now so desire to paint is low, heh.
I’m cataloging my paints, which I’ve been meaning to do since the KS paints came in to basically complete my collection. I’m making:
– Swatch sheets, little squares of paint with the number and name below.
– Chips, little rectangles of plasticard with swatch, number, name
– XLS inventory with store image, number, name, triad, metallic or no, and quantity
It’s going to take a long time but at least I finally got started. I only got up to Snow Shadow in an hour 🙁 But when it’s done it should dramatically speed up planning and reference. The swatch sheet removes and issues with printing or uncalibrated screens. The chips are really nice to use like paint chips for house painting, see what colors look like next to each other.
I was pretty surprised to hear about this. The first Bones KS has been hell on the staff there and basically the company has been shut down the entire year. There were signs of the stress as early as last November when the site stopped getting updated properly, they’d miss a lot of things when it was. The amount of overtime and lack of vacation, pulling non-labor staff in for labor, it has really put the company through a rough time.
That said…Reaper is owned and operated by a couple accountants. So I imagine this KS blew the doors off the books.
Thomas is a good start, but Bryan has said it is not even close to capable of keeping up with the demand for Bones (the original non-KS Bones demand). I think they got it as more of an educational tool for staff and to learn the logistics of casting in plastic before moving the operation in house.
That said…there is a good chance this is the next phase of that and they’ll be putting a couple more plastic casting machines in that new space.
They’ve also learned a lot about what does and does not work in Bonesium, they’ve already pulled several SKU from the catalog.
Overall it should be interesting at the least. I’m not sure given my experience with Bones minis that I’m interested in the next KS (whew). My hope is that they’ve learned enough about the logistics that they can run their company while fulfilling this next KS. I had the metal for a year pledge and took the buyout because I was concerned (despite statements to the contrary) about Reaper’s commitment to producing metal minis in an ongoing capacity (ie new sculpts). I’m happy for their success with Bones, you won’t find a nicer bunch of folks with amazing customer service, but I’m a painter, not a gamer, and Bones just isn’t for me.
You know what? No.
I’m not going to paint this. Maybe some day. But no. Not now.
I’m still trying to be positive about Bones. But starting to paint this guy, some of the big scales, ok I’m laying in the first tones. But then everything keeps mushing out into nothingness, just a bumpy mess. Maybe a better painter can spend all day freehanding this stuff in, but I’m not there. Give me something to paint.
So then I look at the face, which I had planned out somewhat and the mush detail abounded more than I thought when looking at the naked model, that whole “Oh, it’s just the subsurface scattering obscuring detail.” The spines, a mushy mess.
No thanks. I didn’t enjoy the process or results of my two pre-KS Bones paint jobs and this one looked as unenjoyable. So I’m not going to waste my time and paint on it. I’m walking away from it and I’m going to have to be extremely picky about my next Bones mini because right now I’m in a pretty bad place as far as my opinion of the material goes.
